Anyway, the Decepticons are stealing energy sources to fuel themselves, and the United States put up a military cordon around their make-shift base. Standard Transformers stuff. The Autobots find themselves at an impasse because they need to find a way to get past this cordon to fight the bad guys and save their friend Sparkplug Wittwicky.
Then along came a spider man to save the day. Spider-Man helps them sneak past the security to fight the bad guys. Is there an awesome team-up between Optimus Prime and Spider-Man? Of all the Transformers the writers could think to pair Spider-Man up with, they chose Gears , the robot who turns into a truck and is best known for being grumpy all the time.
Wonderful choice! The idea of teaming superheroes up with giant robots seems like a fine idea on paper, but executing it, you get things like this:. Years later when the Transformers teamed up with the New Avengers , nobody seemed to mention this humiliating outing, and with good reason. The original limited series kind of ended on a down note. Shockwave appeared and blew up all the Autobots.
Taking things a step further, the Autobots were strung from the ceiling of their headquarters like cheap cuts of meat. Adding insult to injury, the Decepticons kept Optimus Prime alive as a severed head! See, the Decepticons wanted to build a new army and needed the Creation Matrix to do it. It was a computer program that gave life to machines, and it was inside the head of Optimus Prime.
This story arc focused on Prime transferring the Creation Matrix into the mind of their human friend Buster Wittwicky.
Instead of doing his own transformation into a charbroiled corpse, Buster got the power to reconstruct machines with his mind. This led to wackiness that involved the Decepticons tricking the Autobots into recovering a fake Optimus head that tried to kill them.
In the end, the Autobots recovered their boss and saved the day. In the Transformers cartoon, the Autobots had a very good relationship with human beings. Here are some examples:. In Transformers 6 , inventor Josie Bellar was crippled during a Decepticon attack. By issue 9 , she had reinvented herself as Circuit Breaker the robot killer. A circuitry mesh repaired her damaged nervous system, and as an added bonus, she was able to fry circuits with electrical blasts. As empowering as that is, her costume was nothing to write home about.
Many robots who were not seen in the cartoon were in the comic book, like Darkwing and Skids. There was even a story about how the Transformers met G. Joe, another Hasbro toy line. Beast Wars was about Transformers who could turn into animals.
They looked like real animals, but they were robots in disguise. The good guys were called Maximals, and their leader was Optimus Primal. The bad guys were called Predacons, and their leader's name was Megatron. He was a different Megatron from the Decepticon leader. In the story, the Maximals and Predacons crashed on Earth a very long time ago, but they did not know where they were. Also, there was too much energy on the planet and it hurt their bodies.
They turned into animals to protect themselves from the energy. They could only turn into robots for a short time before the energy started to hurt them. Later in the story, many of the robots turn into Transmetals, which means they looked like robot animals instead of real animals. The Predacons find out they are on Earth, and Megatron tries to find the Autobots and Decepticons, who are on a space ship called the Ark.
Megatron tries to kill Optimus Prime, who is still sleeping, so that he can change the future. There was another show called Beast Machines that continues the story that started in Beast Wars. At the end of Beast Wars, the Maximals tried to catch Megatron. At the beginning of Beast Machines, he escapes and takes control over Cybertron. There are only four Maximals left and Megatron tries to stop them.
Megatron creates new robots called Vehicons, who try to catch the Maximals. Later, we learn that the Vehicons are really Maximals or Predacons that Megatron caught and tried to control. In doing so, Budiansky would give life to many beloved characters of the Transformers franchise, such as Bumble Bee, Starscream , and Megatron.
Regardless Bob Budiansky was responsible for making the once identity-less robots into fully-fledged characters. An example of Marvel adapting the toyline for American children can be seen with the character Megatron , who originally was a hero in the Japanese Microchange line.
Due to the fact that his alternate form was a handgun, it was decided that Megatron would be rebranded as the leader of the evil Decepticon army it makes sense, considering how morally questionable gun users like The Punisher were being portrayed in Marvel Comics at the time.
Through the work of Jim Shooter and Bob Budiansky, Marvel created the initial source material that Hasbro would use to launch the Transformers toyline in America.
