Once skeptical of the halo safety device on Formula One cars, driver Romain Grosjean acknowledged it likely saved his life after his car was split in half and engulfed in flames in a horrific crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
But safety is. Each year, the cars change to become faster and safer for the drivers. With this comes a change to how much things might cost. One such feature is the halo device. Grosjean credits the halo with saving his life. With that perspective, a halo is an invaluable tool in the Formula 1 arsenal. Our everyday road cars, in comparison, only generates 1 G of braking force. The biggest braking action currently in Formula 1 sees drivers braking from mph to 40 mph to negotiate a tight turn. This heavy braking is achieved within just ft and in only 2.
And, drivers need to negotiate that corner 67 times in a race. On average, a NASCAR driver hardly touches the brake pedal of their race car on large oval tracks such as Indianapolis, Talladega and Daytona — other than when entering the pit lane or in braking to avoid crashes.
Aerodynamics is the way air passes over, around and under a race car to affect its performance and handling. Aerodynamic downforce pushes Formula 1 cars to the ground with such force that it could theoretically drive upside down in a tunnel. The front and rear wings feature separate blades to not only reduce drag on straights but to also increase downforce when cornering.
This allows drivers to deploy DRS on straights, which opens the rear wing and dramatically reduces drag to increase speed by as much as 10 mph. A NASCAR race is usually 3 to 4 hours in duration with drivers clocking up between and miles each race over laps of tracks that are 1- to 2-miles long. Formula 1 races are completed in less than 2 hours with cars running for around miles over tight and twisting multi-corner tracks. Where NASCAR drivers aim to lap at around mph without lifting off the gas, Formula 1 tracks require drivers to be incredibly accurate in accelerating and braking for around 22 corners per lap for an average of 57 laps a race.
A Formula 1 team will spend many hours developing race strategies to help one of their cars scoring as many championship points as possible, and will usually not allow teammates to fight for victory. Hamilton: I don't understand why F1 cars are getting heavier. It has been a tricky past few races for Sergio Perez. The Red Bull driver has mustered just 16 points since the British Grand Prix in July and the team's constructors' championship chances have taken a hit. Yet the Mexican remains optimistic that he has all the tools he needs to turn his performances around. But he came into the weekend with a streak of recent crashes hanging over him.
The technical directive issued by Formula 1 to reduce levels of automation in pitstops has given teams an unwelcome period of adjustment. Although safety was the primary goal, it has already had a significant impact on the title race and puts extra pressure on teams to deliver as the season reaches the business end.
Some 18 drivers have finished runner-up to Lewis Hamilton on his way to wins. The Russian GP was decided by late-arriving rain that allowed some to climb and caused others to plummet. But the events which played out beforehand are equally significant when considering the all-important driver ratings.
Until rain turned the Russian Grand Prix on its head in the closing stages, Lando Norris was set to convert his first Formula 1 pole position into a maiden win.
But having recovered well from being shuffled back at the start, Hamilton and his Mercedes team called the changing conditions spot-on for a landmark th F1 victory. At the Italian Grand Prix Daniel Ricciardo turned around a troubled F1 season and, in F2, Oscar Piastri demonstrated once again that he is a potential star of the future. Tickets Subscribe. Sign in.
